逸瑶 刘(Yiyao Liu) / Mia

逸瑶 刘(Yiyao Liu) / Mia

My formal name is a Chinese name, which is 逸瑶 刘(Yiyao Liu).
刘(Liu) is a common family name in China, which means there are lots of people sharing their family name with me. Maybe there are indeed some relationships between us, but we don’t even know.

Actually, 逸瑶(Yiyao) is a combination of two Chinese characters---- 逸(Yi) and 瑶(Yao), but there is not a middle name either. 逸(Yi) means beautiful and peaceful, and the character just looks like a running bunny. 瑶(Yao) means precious jade, which is kind of an extremely beautiful jewelry.I think the meaning of my Chinese name is “a beautiful bunny running with a jade stone in peace.” That’s funny, right?

I also have an English name which I chose by myself. It’s Mia.
I really like cats, and I want to be a cat in my next life, if there will be one. Therefore I chose this name that sounds like a cat’s meow. Besides, I have a cat at home, and we’re both named “Mia”.Sometimes I really feel like being a cute cat, mysterious and independent, sweet and adorable.

Linda- My name

My Name
Two years ago, I came to the U.S from China. I chose Linda as my English name because my real Chinese name is always hard to pronounce for local people. Linda is a common name. If someone yelled “Linda” in a crowd of street, I guess at least two or three people would turn their heads. However, I still like my name. It is very simple and easy to remember. To my surprise, I have been told by my Mexican friends that Linda has good meaning in Spanish, it means cute and beautiful. I’m very happy about it. In general, I’m glad to have Linda as my name. Though it is not a unique name, it is always a perfect name to me.

On the other hand, I have used my Chinese name as official name since I was born. When I just born, my parent gave me a nickname as “lingling”, it sounds like the ring of Jingle Bell. My parents decide my name when I was about three months old. They have looked for my name in the dictionary for a week, in order to get a beautiful name for me. After they discussed it with all our family members, they picked “Shuning” as my name. In Chinese, “Shuning” has good meaning as peaceful, and comfortable. It is a best wish of my parent because they hope me to have a peaceful and comfortable life.

I think I’m lucky, because now I have two nice name in my life.

My name

My name is Yanyuan Chen, and I am from China. I was born in a traditional Chinese family, and my grandfather gave my name to me. In fact, I don’t really like my name because many girls have the name in the year that I was born, 1987. I think I accept the name just because my grandfather gave it to me. I didn’t know the meaning of my name until my parents told me why they chose the name for me. In China, many families give meaningful names for their newborn babies. They hope girls can be beautiful and kind, so did my grandfather.

In Chinese, “Yan” represents beauty, and “Yuan” represents kind. My grandfather and my parents hoped that I could be a beautiful girl, so they gave me the name. I love my grandfather even though I have no impression of him because he died when I was a little girl. For me, my name is not only a name, but also a gift that my grandfather sent me. For many it is just a really common name, but for me, it has a special meaning.

I gave an English name for myself after I came to the United States, because I found it was difficult to accurately pronunciation my Chinese name for foreigners. In fact there is someone that has the same name with me in my class, so I decided to give myself an English name. I think it is easy to pronounce and easy to remember.
Hailey Huang
1.27.2015
My Name
I have been in America for five years, and I have used the name Hailey for the last two years since I became a U.S. citizen. My Chinese name is Qinger which is hard for people to pronounce in America. Qinger sounds nice in Chinese and nobody has the same name around me because it is not common in China. In China most of the sisters and brothers have the same word in their names, just like my sister’s is Pinger and my name is Qinger. We both have “ER” in our names, and so do my cousins sisters. “ER” means son in Chinese. I think my grandparents really wanted a grandson because of the Chinese tradition. Qinger has another meaning which is “Qing”is the salutation of government officials in ancient in China, so I think my grandparents hoped I could be an officer.
I changed my name to Hailey because it sounds similar as Qinger in Cantonese. I believe that Hailey also means natural, capable, smart and helpful because Hailey has a meaning of hay field. It has the image of laying on natural endless golden hay field under the blue sky with pieces of white as snow cloud. Do you have a feeling of peace and comfort? You could also put all the annoyance away so that you could make a better choice.

Since I started using this name, it was easier for my classmates to remember me and easier to make friends. The most important thing is teachers and classmates don’t need to ask me how to pronounce every time they wanted to call me while it always happened in Qinger. I am also more confident when I introduced myself to others.

My name

My Name
My name sounds funny, and it has two different pronunciations in Chinese. My name is Yanyuan, but it has different meanings between Yan and Yuan.  In Chinese Yan means beautiful or colorful, but Yuan means to be a gentlewomanly lady. However, I only found out my name has two pronunciations after I went to elementary school, and I learned Yuan has the same sound with money. Consequently, my classmates always laughed at me when they were pronouncing my name.

One story from my name that I heard from my mom was when I was born, my grandfather named me Yanting. Nonetheless, my mom thought this name was too common, and there were three babies with the same name who were living in the same village. Later, my mom changed my name to Yanyuan.

I loved this name until last semester because I met a classmate that has the same name as mine. The woman who has the same name with me in the same class and our classmates had a hard time figuring out who was who. Moreover, this is the only person I knew that has the same name with me, so I think my name is not special anymore. Thus, I hope I could love my name like before.

My Name

In English my name means a “garden of holly”. In Spanish it is shorter and easier. My name is like the number six. When my mom was seven months pregnant, my brother told her my name would be Leslie. He knew I was going to be the happiness of the family and the sunshine of their lives. My name is easy but common like the word Monday. My name is like a flower in the summer, because it brings happiness and love to others. My name is like the phone everybody wants. My name can be written in different ways as Lesley, Leslee, Lezlie, and Lesley, and that’s what makes
it interesting.
My name will never change because this is part of my life and what makes my personality better. That’s how people know as bright, smart, and helpful to them. My name helps me to love others and bring happiness to them, by helping people when they feel lost and not letting them stay down if they fall, if no help them to stand up strong and make things better. It can mean anything in other languages, but the most important is what it means to my family and me.

My name- Chen

                                                                      My Name
My name is simple, and it’s easy to remember. My last name is really common in China. It comes from a big family a long time ago. My first name is simple too, and it sounds like the number four in Chinese, just different tones. Number four is not good luck in China because it has the similar sound as “death” in Chinese. My grandfather named me six months after I was born, and I had another name before I was born. It was difficult and complicated; I even couldn't remember it. The meaning of my name in Chinese is to think about something, to ponder something. It often reminds me to think a lot before acting, and that is what my grandfather wanted to tell me. My parents love my sister’s and my names, and my parents always say they are simple to write and easy to remember, but I don’t like that much because my name sounds like a girl’s name when people hear it for the first time.

After I came to the US, people said my name differently, and sometimes my first name confused people. That is why I just used my last name. They can pronounce it right which that makes me feel much better, and it doesn't bother me anymore.

Everyone has a name, but it’s just a name. For others, maybe it’s not a big deal, but for me, it means a lot. It reminds me of many things, and it’s always like an alarm bell in my life. It tells me to think about all the things carefully, and that I should be patient.

Felix

                                                            My Name
A name always has a meaning. Mine is composed by an imported one “Felix” and an African one “Ayodele”. I don’t really know the meaning of Felix. However I’m sure that it doesn't have a negative connotation, nor a positive one. I think it is somewhere around average. I’m glad to have this name just because it comes from my parents, and it means a lot for them.

The history behind this name is related to my father’s work. My father works for the military in Togo. A couple of years ago he was chosen to participate at an important military program formation named “Formation Felix Houphouet Bouagny”. During this formation of two years, my mother gave birth to me, and in remembrance of this important formation they decided to name me Felix. I am really proud of this name because it is a tremendous souvenir from my parents.

My African name Ayodele comes from the Yoruba’s tribe. Ayodele means “brought happiness at home”. It has been given to me because my grandparents want me to be recognized everywhere that I go as a Yoruba. Everyone that is from this tribe can know that I belong to the same tribe as them just by hearing my name. It always reminds me of who I am and where am I come from.

Abdul - My Name

Abdul Shalaby

My Name
My name is Abdulaziz, but I like people to call me Abdul because it is easier and shorter. My name is hard to pronounce, so I want people to call me whatever they want to make it easier for them. It is complicated because it is unique and most people in the U.S. have never heard it before. Every semester, students struggle to pronounce my name, so I tell them to call me Abdul or any nickname to memorize it.

I like my name because it is so popular in my country, Saudi Arabia, and it is easy for people in my country to pronounce. My name is one of God’s names, and I am happy for that. My parents decided to choose this name to make it similar to my twin brother's name, which is Abdulrahman. There are many ways to write the last part of my name as in Abdulazeez or Abdul-Aziz. Either one is correct, but I prefer to write it Abdulaziz.

Abdulrahman

When I think about my name, I always think about mercy and kindness. God, in Islamic religion has ninety nine names, and this is one of them. It means the servant of the merciful. I think everyone with this name is kind and makes friends easily. Everyone with this name likes adventures and trying new things.
The story behind my name is when my twin brother and I were born, the doctor said we would not live because we were born at six months. Consequently, they had to put us in the hospital’s crib for a long time with the breathing machines, until they made sure we were safe to leave the hospital. Also, I had breathing problems when I was born and they had to do a tracheostomy so I could breathe. I stayed in the hospital for almost two years and I had many nurses talking care of me. Therefore, my mom was stressed out and she thought it was a good idea to call us one of God’s names.
My name is hard to pronounce for some people because it has so many letters, so it is funny how people say it. I like my name because it reflects my personality. I am nice, friendly, and smiley. My brother’s name is almost the same as mine. It is Abdulaziz. The similarity in our name is the first part of it. First part is Abdul and it means the servant of. The difference in it is the second part, and it is God’s name.
